When it comes to enabling users with applications, the world of enterprise IT has never been more challenging. If we go back only a few years, organisations primarily used not only Microsoft Windows devices but also Windows applications. Enterprise mobility and the consumerisation of IT led to a huge increase in the variety of devices and operating systems being used. MacBook and Chromebook laptops, mobile phones and rugged devices are just a few examples of the devices found in organisations these days.

We’ve also seen a big change in the types of applications being used. No longer are users enabled with only Windows applications. Applications are now written specifically for mobile devices, some Windows applications are virtualised, and there has been a huge shift from on-premises software to applications being delivered using Software as a Service (SaaS) over the internet.

Organisations must adapt to these changes to remain competitive and keep employees productive. The prospect can seem daunting considering the cost and complexity of deploying multiple, new toolsets and learning different ways to manage all this. In addition, organisations must consider the end users. How much more complexity does all this add for them?

The challenge for enterprise IT in this modern workplace is, how do we enable users to consume all these applications across a range of devices? Equally important is, how do we maintain a common security policy across all of these? Lastly, how do we address the gulf in ease of use between the consumer IT world and the enterprise world to simply it all for end users?

In this lightboard video, I talk about how organizations overcome all these challenges using the integrated VMware Workspace ONE digital workspace platform, which enables:

  • Consumer Simplicity: All application types are available in a simple to use app store, giving users a familiar consumer-type experience. This makes onboarding and daily use quicker and easier.
  • Single Sign-On (SSO): Users access all their applications with only a single set of credentials, further simplifying the user experience.
  • Consistent User Experiences: Users get the same consistent view of applications across any device.
  • Enterprise Security: Conditional access policies mean IT can support all this while maintaining tight security, even on untrusted devices. Applications can only be accessed if defined policy conditions are met at any given time.
  • Multi-Factor Authentication: The ability to add two-factor authentication to any application extends to applications that don’t natively support it.
  • Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) Support: With conditional access policies and adaptive enrollment technologies, organizations can fully support BYOD.

In addition to the application delivery advantages I focus on in the video, organizations also use the Workspace ONE platform for:

  • Cloud-Based Management: Organizations can switch from a legacy, on-premises management solution to a modern, cloud-based strategy where devices can always be managed, regardless of location.
  • Unified Endpoint Management (UEM): With VMware AirWatch UEM technology, organizations can manage an entire fleet of devices from a single portal, from enrollment and policies to patching and application lifecycle management. This includes support for Windows 10, macOS, Chrome OS, iOS and Android operating systems, as well as rugged devices, to name a few examples.
  • Out-of-Box Enrollment (OOBE): No longer does enterprise IT need to endure the painstaking task of re-imaging all new machines. OOBE enables IT to ship devices direct to end users, who can enroll devices out of the box, enabling management and configuration from the cloud.
  • Windows as a Service: With virtual desktops and virtual applications, enabled by VMware Horizon, IT can securely deliver desktops and apps without any data ever leaving the data center.
